Amazon is guillotining second-hand books to scan them for AI training, and the press has reached for Savonarola and the Berlin pyre. The comparison does not hold. Destructive scanning preserves the text, the courts have accepted it, and the books at stake are mostly post-1970 stock. The real question is who gets to use the resulting corpora, and why the public libraries that already hold these books cannot share them.
